ESL Pro League Season 17 Overview
Season 17 kicked off on February 22. It will feature a new format, with 32 teams competing for a share of $850,000 and a spot at both IEM Cologne 2023 and BLAST Premier World Final 2023. Check out Esports betting at gg.bet for all information about the ESL Pro League Season 17.
The new model retains four groups of the contest to begin the tournament, with 32 teams competing. Each group will contain eight teams and a triple-elimination competition. Four teams from each group will advance to the playoffs, with the best squads progressing directly to the quarterfinals, the second-best squads going to round 12, and the third and fourth-best squads landing in round 16.
The winners of past events will join the 15 permanent partner teams, including FaZe Clan, Team Liquid, Heroic, and Team Vitality, allowing fans to watch some of the most formidable CS: GO squads. They include the winners of the ESL Challenger Rotterdam 2022 and IEM CS: GO Rio Major, Outsiders, and the winners of the ESL Challenger Melbourne 2022, paiN Gaming.
With such a complicated bracket and perhaps the strongest teams worldwide, ESL Pro League Season 17 is building up to be one of 2023's most intense competitions. With 11 teams from the Conferences, 15 are already ESL permanent partners, so they are automatically in the tournament as well; 3 teams are also here due to the ESL World Ranking.
Group Stage:
- There will be four groups, each with eight teams.
- All matches will be best-of-three.
- All groups are in triple elimination, meaning three losses will result in elimination.
However, there are three brackets, so there are plenty of opportunities. Each group's top four teams will make the playoffs, with 16 teams in the postseason.
The group stage winners will advance directly to the quarterfinals. Second-placed teams will advance to the round of 12 high seeds, where they will face the group winners from third and fourth place. Third-placed teams will go to the round of 16 high seeds, and fourth-placed teams will advance to the round of 16 low seeds.
Playoffs: In playoffs, there will be multiple BO3 matches, and it will be a single-elimination bracket, meaning that if you lose, you are eliminated; there are no second chances. The third and fourth-placed teams in the group stages will be at a distinct disadvantage, while the group winners will have a clear advantage and a greater chance to advance.
This single-elimination bracket will continue until the Grand Final, the lone BO5 match to determine the ESL Pro League Season 17 champion, who will take home $200,000 and a guaranteed spot at IEM Cologne 2023 later in July, where G2 Esports are already present as victors of IEM Katowice 2023.
European Conference
The European Conference consists of 14 teams that have won regional tournaments. These 14 teams competed in a double elimination bracket, with all matches being best-of-three, meaning they would be eliminated if they lost twice. The team would instantly go to the lower bracket after losing a game. Two teams could qualify in the upper bracket, but only one could in the lower bracket; therefore, they could not lose. This year, Eternal Fire, SAW, and Forze qualified for the EPL (S17).
Asian Conference
Rare Atom, Lynn Vision Gaming, and IHC Esports were the top three Asian teams from ECL S41, 42, and 43. Only two could advance to EPL S17. Since Lynn Vision was the highest-rated team, Rare Atom, and IHC faced off in a double elimination bracket, all matches best-of-three, and oddly, despite having the advantage, Lynn Vision still lost two matches. IHC and Rare Atom qualified for EPL S17.
North American Conference
ATK, Nouns, and MIBR were the only teams competing from ECL seasons 41,42, and 43. Since ATK had the advantage, NOUNS and MIBR faced each other in a double-elimination bracket, with the winner facing ATK to determine which 2 of these three teams would qualify for ESL Pro League Season 17. MIBR and ATK qualified.
Oceanic Conference
Like the South America Conference, there was an open qualifier with eight teams participating in a single bracket elimination match, all BO1. Only the grand finals were a BO3, and Hello Kitten Uwu secured a spot in the conference, along with Greyhound, the highest-rated team, and Rooster, who had to face Hello Kitten Uwu in a double bracket elimination match. Still, it was Greyhound and Rooster who advanced to EPL S17.
South America Conference
In South America, only three teams made it to that stage, with Flamengo winning the open qualifier out of 8 teams competing in a single elimination bracket where all matches were BO1, and the Grand Finals against MetaGaming being BO3. Flamengo was the team that qualified for the conference, while Imperial and 00 Nation represented ECL Melbourne and Brazil Premier League, respectively. Because of Imperial's strong rating, 00 Nation and Flamengo faced off in a double elimination bracket, and Imperial and 00 Nation could advance to Season 17 of the ESL Pro League.
Conclusion
Season 17 of the ESL Pro League will air on ESL's Twitch and YouTube sites. While numerous matches will air simultaneously throughout the group stage, you should follow ESL's B channels on Twitch and YouTube, as several games will stream on them.
